Implementing a Quality Management System

 

PROBLEM:

To meet customer requirements, a not-for-profit workshop needed to design and implement an effective Quality Management System.

APPROACH:

The CMS/client project team began by documenting selected practices such as purchasing and other practices essential to a Quality Management System: Document Control, Corrective Action and Control of Nonconforming Product

The Quality team generated a Quality Manual and all other necessary procedures.  They then set up a format for work instructions and other documents, including forms, logs and reports that were required to operate the system successfully.  Following this, they planned full implementation of the system, followed up on completion of documentation and established document control for both the QMS and departmental/business unit documents.  Training included an overview for all staff members, followed by deployment sessions with consumers and staff to review the operational implementation at the work unit level.

The final phase of the project included establishing the content, format and responsibility for management review.  This was done in parallel with training and implementation of the internal audit program, including recording and completion of corrective actions on findings.

RESULTS:

Based on the resolution of the final internal audit findings and the maintenance of practices as defined in the Quality Manual and subordinate documents, the Certification Audit was successful and the company received ISO 9001 registration.
